What We Learned at GBTA 2023

September 5, 2023

Many of us often focus on the destination when we think about transportation. But what if we told you that the journey, the experiences, and the conversations along the way are what truly shape our understanding and love for the transportation experience? This sentiment took center stage at the recent Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) convention in Dallas.

For the U.S. Sedan Service Worldwide team, the convention was more than just an event. It was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in impactful knowledge, be inspired by the luminaries of the industry, and further commit ourselves to redefining luxury in ground transportation.

Reflecting on the enlightening sessions and vibrant networking opportunities, we are eager to analyze and share what we learned with you. Dive in with us as we break down our biggest takeaways and decipher what they mean for the industry, our esteemed clientele, and the future of luxury transportation.

Understanding the Economic Trends in Transportation

Change is the only constant, and in our world, it often comes riding on the wheels of economic shifts. Here are some statistics about pricing and ride services in our industry gathered from polled attendees at GBTA:

    • 28% of organizations are tightening their belts, revisiting their travel policies, and setting precise boundaries to ensure optimal use of resources.
    • 28% have embraced modern solutions like ride-hailing services, but they are not without challenges, especially in ensuring traveler safety and duty of care.
    • There has been a 27% increase in transportation prices in a span of just three years, driven by an 8.23% average annual inflation rate.
    • Further, a 67% rise in average ride prices from 2019 to 2023 emphasizes that financial strain.

There are a few things we can take away from this data. First, it is apparent that controlling costs is a priority for a significant portion of businesses, as emphasized by the 28% that adopted ride-hailing services as an alternative to traditional modes of transportation. This reflects an openness to innovative approaches and the search for flexibility in our industry. But, while ride-hailing offers benefits, there are challenges in terms of ensuring traveler safety and fulfilling the duty of care. While these solutions are attractive, they may also introduce new problems to solve. Many corporations and individuals are still opting for private transportation to have stress-free, safe, & high duty of care. Ridesharing apps continue to gradually increase each year, but with the rise in rider safety issues and limited availability, more passengers revert to chauffeured transportation through private companies.

Rising prices are also a major concern, as there has been a 27% increase in transportation prices over three years, alongside an 8.23% average annual inflation rate. Businesses are thus under pressure to either absorb these rising costs or pass them on to clients or customers. The high annual inflation rate means that static or slow-to-adapt pricing strategies may hinder company profitability. When it comes to average ride price surges, there has been a significant 67% rise in the average price of rides from 2019 to 2023. This is a separate but related point to the general increase in transportation costs, emphasizing the pressure on businesses and consumers alike. This highlights the need for organizations to be proactive rather than reactive in their strategies.

In summary, organizations need to consider a multifaceted approach that involves cost-containment, embracing innovation and partnerships, ensuring safety, and being financially agile to navigate the complexities of the current transportation landscape. In response to the rapidly changing landscape, U.S. Sedan Service Worldwide has implemented a multi-tiered pricing strategy to offer cost-effective solutions for our clientele facing financial pressures due to inflation. Recognizing the growing concern for traveler safety, we have also invested in advanced tracking and security features, ensuring a duty of care that rivals any ride-hailing service. Embracing financial agility, we frequently revisit and adjust our policies, enabling us to remain competitive while adapting to market dynamics and client needs.

Sustainability: A Commitment Beyond Words

The narrative around sustainability has moved beyond boardroom discussions and has firmly entrenched itself in action plans:

    • 69% of traffic-related emissions come from road vehicles, which calls for companies to pivot towards greener, more sustainable solutions.
    • 95% of a company's carbon footprint is made up of Scope 3 emissions.
    • 44% of GBTA attendees are no longer bystanders. They are actively engaging with the issue, tracking or considering tracking emissions.

With 69% of traffic-related emissions coming from road vehicles, there's a compelling case for companies to transition to more sustainable modes of transportation. Especially given that 95% of a company's carbon footprint consists of Scope 3 emissions, which are indirect emissions that occur in a company's value chain. This indicates that sustainability efforts need to extend beyond just direct operations. Luckily, 44% of attendees are not merely passive observers but are actively engaged in sustainability measures like tracking emissions. This suggests a rising tide of corporate responsibility and action on this front.

In essence, sustainability is becoming a business imperative, not just a topic for discussion. Companies everywhere are increasingly taking steps to address their environmental impact, and we are grateful to see this in the realm of transportation too. The focus is on direct operations and broader supply chain activities, and these industry events indicate a growing commitment to action. We are actively addressing sustainability by adding electric and hybrid vehicles to our fleet, aiming to cut our traffic-related emissions as much as possible over the next three years. To tackle the issue of Scope 3 emissions, we are working closely with our suppliers to ensure that they also adopt eco-friendly practices, thereby reducing our overall carbon footprint. Additionally, we are committed to monitoring our emissions and learning everything we can to address this important environmental issue.

Employee Well-Being in a Dynamic World

The post-pandemic world has heightened our sense of awareness, especially concerning mental health and consumer safety:

Closing the Network Gap: Elevating Women's Voices

    • Women Leadership Growth: A noteworthy increase from 36% to 37% in women in leadership roles from 2016 to 2022 shows a trend toward more gender-balanced leadership.
    • Empowerment Mantra: For young female professionals, the message is clear — don't be afraid to put yourself out there.
    • Networking Wisdom: Remember the 'Elevator Speech.' Introduce not just your company but yourself. The art of networking is more than a sales pitch.

Human Trafficking in the Aviation and Hospitality Industry

    • Know the Difference: Human trafficking and smuggling are not the same. The former is a crime against a person and based on exploitation, while smuggling is a transportation-based crime against a border.
    • High-Risk Events: Big sports locations like the Super Bowl and World Cup are hotspots for human trafficking concerns. Awareness and vigilance are key.

Traveling "Well"

    • Holistic Pre-Travel Prep: Comprehensive preparation before travel can mitigate mental health and well-being risks for your traveling workforce.
    • Work-Life Balance: It's not just about efficient travel policies; the focus must also include maintaining a healthy work-life balance for employees.
    • After-Care Resources: Provide post-travel resources and support to ensure your employees' well-being is cared for even after they return.

Navigating Change: Ground Transportation Program Success

    • Tech-Enabled Planning: Online booking portals are invaluable tools for planning and visualizing the full trip in advance.

The bullet points underscore the multi-dimensional nature of well-being in the ground transportation industry. There's a clear move towards gender balance, with a notable increase in women in leadership roles, but this growth also highlights the need for more robust initiatives and mentorship, especially for young female professionals. Networking and personal development stand out as vital components for employee wellbeing, while the emphasis on "Traveling Well" reveals that a comprehensive approach—from pre-travel prep to post-travel support—is essential for staff mental health and overall wellbeing.

Ethical responsibilities, particularly around human trafficking awareness during large events, present significant challenges that transportation companies must address, ensuring that staff are well informed and trained. Meanwhile, the substantial rise in transportation costs since 2019 and the emergence of technological solutions, like online booking portals and electric vehicles, suggest an industry in flux. This dynamic environment mandates financial agility, technological adaptation, and an unwavering focus on holistic success metrics to ensure the well-being of both employees and the company's bottom line.

U.S. Sedan Service Worldwide is deeply committed to addressing the ground transportation industry's multifaceted challenges. Recognizing the need for greater diversity, we've implemented targeted mentorship programs designed to elevate our women team members into leadership roles. On the wellbeing front, we offer many valuable resources to help support and ensure a balanced work-life experience for our employees. Ethical considerations are also a priority; our staff undergoes rigorous training to identify and report human trafficking, particularly during high-risk events like major sports tournaments. U.S. Sedan Service Worldwide is at the forefront of setting industry standards for social responsibility, employee well-being, and operational efficiency through these comprehensive efforts, and we’re always trying to learn more to better our company and our client experiences.

Reflections and Commitments for a Brighter Transportation Future

Attending the GBTA conference provided U.S. Sedan Service Worldwide with invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of the ground transportation industry. From the increasing emphasis on gender diversity in leadership roles to the heightened ethical responsibilities around human trafficking, it's clear that our sector is at a critical juncture. We were particularly struck by the comprehensive approach to employee wellbeing discussed during the event. With mental health and work-life balance coming to the forefront, and given the 27% rise in transportation costs over the past few years, it's evident that a multi-dimensional strategy is essential for both operational efficiency and employee welfare.

The data and discussions at GBTA reaffirm our commitment to tackling these industry challenges head-on. We are invigorated to continue our efforts in leadership diversity through targeted mentorship programs and are already in the process of fortifying our training modules to enhance awareness around human trafficking.
